almost four years
It just hit me. While writing my first ever post, I had to go back and figure out when I started the basement renovation project. I couldn’t remember off the top of my head. Turns out I started demolition of the old basement in mid-2005.
People are always asking when I’ll be done and why I’m not done yet. Both good questions, without clear answers. The project started with the idea of creating a better space for watching TV; call it a home theater or a glorified rec room. So, my original goal, based on absolutely no knowledge of what was ahead, was to be done for the Super Bowl in 2006. I mean, who couldn’t git ‘er done in a year and a half?
One thing that many renovation victims have to contend with is living in the mess. Since my project is a basement, I can walk upstairs at the end of the day, shut the door, and forget about it. Not having to live in it reduces the urgency to finish it. I’m not compelled by drywall dust and capricious plumbing to open the door and go back down day after day. I can take a week off, or a month, or three, and wait for the mood to strike me again.
To the observer it seems to be about finishing. To me, though, it’s more cliche than that: it’s about the journey. And, I guess that’s a good thing, because when I’m the only one working on it, it’s gonna take a long long time. And, yes, I’ve had help with a few tasks here and there, which I will document in later posts. Muchos props to those who’ve lent a hand.
So, two more Super Bowls later, I wonder if I will be done for the next one. A little less than a year. I know this blog is new, and you don’t really know where the project stands, but, to shortcut it, I need to finish the laundry sink, the wet bar, the bathroom, and the flooring. Sounds easy, right?
